How the Butter Score works
The Butter Score is a 0 to 100 grade for how well a website turns visitors into leads. It runs 69 passive checks on your homepage and four public files: robots.txt, your XML sitemap, llms.txt and a made-up page address that should return "not found." Google PageSpeed Insights runs the mobile speed test.
The five categories
- Conversion and lead capture (25% of the score, 15 checks): click-to-call links, a short lead form, a clear call to action, chat, analytics, social proof, a privacy link and text-message terms near forms.
- SEO on-page (20%, 15 checks): title and meta description, a single H1, a canonical tag, whether the page can be indexed, image alt text, word count, social sharing tags, and whether your phone and location appear.
- Speed and mobile (20%, 7 checks): the PageSpeed mobile performance score, Largest Contentful Paint, Interaction to Next Paint (or Total Blocking Time when field data is missing), Cumulative Layout Shift, viewport and zoom settings, and accessibility.
- AI search readiness (20%, 14 checks): Organization or LocalBusiness structured data and how complete it is, FAQ content, whether AI search crawlers such as OAI-SearchBot, Claude-SearchBot and PerplexityBot can reach you, text that loads without JavaScript, llms.txt and freshness.
- Technical and security (15%, 18 checks): HTTPS and redirects, security headers, robots.txt and sitemap health, a real 404 response, compression, server response time and mixed content.
How the score is calculated
Each category score is the points you earned divided by the points possible, ignoring checks that don't apply. The weights are our product decision, not a law of nature: lead capture counts most because a business website's job is to produce leads. Two caps keep the grade honest. If search engines are blocked from your homepage, the score can't go above 59. If your site doesn't use HTTPS, it can't go above 69.
robots.txt rules are read the way RFC 9309 says crawlers read them. llms.txt is worth only 3 of the 100 AI points, because Google has said it doesn't support the file. It's cheap insurance, not a ranking factor. Training crawlers like GPTBot are shown for information only and don't change your score.
Why these checks matter
Speed loses people before they read a word: Google's 2017 research found that 53% of mobile site visits were abandoned when a page took longer than 3 seconds to load. And search is changing. In BrightLocal's 2026 survey, 45% of consumers said they use AI tools like ChatGPT for local business recommendations, and Pew Research Center found users clicked a traditional result on 8% of visits that showed an AI summary, versus 15% without one (2025).
What an automated audit can't tell you
Automated checks read code. They can't judge your offer, your photos or how your phone gets answered. Speed scores also vary between runs, because PageSpeed Insights tests under simulated conditions. Treat your Butter Score as a fast, honest starting point, then fix the items that cost you the most points first.
