Quick answer

What makes a good business sign or banner?

A good sign or banner can be read in a couple of seconds from where your audience actually is: a passing car, a sidewalk or across a room. Buttered Business designs and prints vinyl banners, yard signs and event signage with large, high-contrast type, one message and, where people can stop, a QR code to a tracked page.

If This Sounds Familiar, Keep Reading

Be honest: how many of these are happening in your business right now?

  • Dry spot #1

    Too many words

A sign that tries to say everything says nothing to someone driving past.

  • Dry spot #2

    Unreadable from the road

Thin fonts, low contrast and small phone numbers disappear at a distance.

  • Dry spot #3

    Faded or flimsy

A sun-bleached banner or a bent yard sign says more about your business than you want it to.

  • Dry spot #4

    Signs that break local rules

Placement and permit rules vary by city, and a removed sign is money thrown away.

Every one of these has a fix, and it starts with seeing your own numbers.

The recipe

How It Works, Step by Step

No mystery and no black box. Hereโ€™s exactly what happens after you say go.

  1. Step 1: Where and how far

We start with where the sign goes and how far away people will be when they read it.

  2. Step 2: Design

We design for that distance with one message and your brand, then send a proof.

  3. Step 3: Print

We print on material suited to the job, indoor or outdoor, in the size you need.

  4. Step 4: Place and track

You put it up with our placement tips, and QR responses flow into your follow-up.

A Sign Has About Two Seconds

A sign works when someone can read it in a glance from where they actually are: a passing car, a sidewalk or across a crowded room. Most people wonโ€™t stop to study it. That one fact drives every design decision we make, from the number of words to the size of the letters.

We design and print vinyl banners, yard signs and event signage built for distance and speed. Big, bold and simple, with a tracked QR code where people can walk up and scan, so you know which sign brought them in.

The Rules of a Readable Sign

  • One message. โ€œGrand Opening Saturdayโ€ beats a list of everything you sell.
  • Big, simple type. Bold, clean letters read at a distance. Script and thin fonts donโ€™t.
  • Strong contrast. Dark on light or light on dark, never mid-tone on mid-tone.
  • Your name or logo. Big enough to recognize, small enough to leave room for the message.
  • One way to respond. A short web address, a phone number or a QR code, depending on whether people can stop.

Banners, Yard Signs and Event Signage

Vinyl banners are the workhorse for storefronts, fences, grand openings and events. Theyโ€™re made for outdoor use and hang with grommets or ties, so you can put them up quickly and take them down when the promotion ends.

Yard signs put your name in the neighborhood: job-site signs for contractors, โ€œNow Enrollingโ€ signs for schools, open house and directional signs for builders, and campaign signs for candidates.

Event signage covers tables, entrances, check-in areas and photo backdrops. Inside, people are closer and moving slower, so a QR code works well here.

Know the Rules Before You Plant a Sign

Cities, counties and homeowners associations set their own sign rules for size, placement and how long temporary signs can stay up, and some require permits. Check with your local planning or code office before you install. A sign that gets pulled for breaking a rule is money and attention wasted.

Political signs have extra requirements. Campaign signs need the correct โ€œPaid for byโ€ disclaimer. Federal rules come from the FEC, and state and local races follow state law. We leave room for the disclaimer in every campaign design. Your treasurer or counsel confirms the exact wording.

Track the Signs People Can Walk Up To

On a sign people can approach, like an entrance, an event table or a yard sign near a walkway, add a QR code that opens a tracked page. Youโ€™ll see which sign or event produced leads, and every lead flows into The Buttered System for fast follow-up. On signs read at speed, we skip the code and use a short, memorable web address instead.

How It Works

  1. Where and how far. You tell us where the sign goes and how far away people will be.
  2. Design. We design one clear message for that distance and send a proof.
  3. Print. We print in the size and material that suit the job.
  4. Place and track. You install it with our placement tips, and QR responses flow into your follow-up.

Choosing the Right Size

Size follows distance. A sign read from a passing car needs fewer words and far bigger letters than a sign read from a few steps away. Before we design, we ask three questions: where will the sign hang, how far away will most people be, and how fast will they be moving? The answers set the size, the number of words and whether a QR code makes sense. If space or local rules limit the size, we cut words before we shrink the type.

What We Wonโ€™t Promise

A sign canโ€™t guarantee visitors. Where it stands, how many people pass it and what it offers decide that, and none of those are ours to promise. Our part is a sign that reads in a glance, material suited to where itโ€™s going and tracking wherever people can stop and scan.

Who Itโ€™s For

A great fit for local businesses with a storefront or job sites, home builders with communities and model homes, private schools with enrollment seasons, nonprofits with events and campaigns that need name recognition fast.

Probably not for you if you need a permanent, illuminated building sign. Thatโ€™s a job for a licensed sign fabricator and installer, and weโ€™ll gladly design the artwork they produce from.

Want your signs to match the rest of your print? We keep your banners, window clings, flyers and business cards on one brand, so people recognize you whether theyโ€™re driving by or standing at your table.

Questions, answered

Straight Answers About Banners & Signs

No jargon, no runaround. If your question isnโ€™t here, ask a real human.

Still chewing on something?

Ask a real human. We answer in plain English and never send you down a jargon rabbit hole.

How big should the text on my sign be?

Big enough to read from where people will actually be. A banner on a building seen from the road needs far larger letters than a table sign at an event. Tell us where itโ€™s going and how far away viewers will be, and weโ€™ll size the type and pick a layout that reads.

Do I need a permit for a banner or yard sign?

Sometimes. Cities, counties and homeowners associations set their own rules for size, placement and how long temporary signs can stay up, and some require permits. Check with your local planning or code office before you install. Weโ€™ll design within the limits you give us.

Can a sign have a QR code?

Yes, where people can stop and walk up to it: entrances, event tables, open houses and yard signs near walkways. On signs read from a moving car, skip the QR code and use a short web address or phone number instead.

Can you print political yard signs?

Yes. Campaign yard signs need room for the correct โ€œPaid for byโ€ disclaimer. Federal rules come from the FEC and state races follow state law. Placement rules also vary by city, so confirm the wording with your treasurer and the placement rules with your local election or code office.

Do you make signs for open houses and model homes?

Yes. Open house, directional and model home signs are a natural fit. For new home communities, we keep signs consistent with your community branding and can add a QR code that opens the community page or a tour booking calendar.

Will my banner hold up outdoors?

We print outdoor banners and yard signs on material made for outdoor use. How long they last depends on sun, wind and how theyโ€™re mounted. Tell us how long you need it to stay up and weโ€™ll recommend a material that fits.
