Not knowing where you stand
You can’t plan for funding if you don’t know your score range or what’s on your reports.
Your personal credit is often the springboard to business credit. Learn what goes into your score, how to keep your file clean and the habits that keep you lender-ready. This is education, not credit repair.
Quick answer
Personal credit matters because many lenders review the owner’s personal credit, especially for newer businesses, and it affects the rates you’re offered on homes, cars and credit lines. Buttered Business offers free personal credit education for business owners: what drives your score, how to read your reports and how to stay lender-ready. We don’t sell credit repair.

Your personal credit is often the springboard to business credit. Many lenders review the owner’s personal credit, especially for newer businesses that don’t have much history yet, and some ask the owner for a personal guarantee. Your personal credit also shapes the rates you’re offered on homes, cars and credit lines. Understanding it is one of the most useful things you can do before you seek funding.
At Buttered Business, we treat your personal credit as its own asset: a foundation for business credit. This page is free education. We show you how to keep your file clean and how to protect your score. We don’t sell credit repair.
According to myFICO, FICO Scores are built from five categories of information. Payment history is the most important, followed by amounts owed:
Experian publishes these ranges for the widely used FICO Score 8, which runs from 300 to 850:
| Rating | Score range |
|---|---|
| Exceptional | 800 to 850 |
| Very good | 740 to 799 |
| Good | 670 to 739 |
| Fair | 580 to 669 |
| Poor | 300 to 579 |
Other scoring models use different ranges, and every lender sets its own standards. Treat these bands as a map, not a promise.
Start with your credit reports, not just your score. Get your free reports from Equifax, Experian and TransUnion at AnnualCreditReport.com, the only website the FTC says is authorized to fill orders for the free reports you’re entitled to by law. Then go line by line: accounts you don’t recognize, late payments you know were on time, balances that look wrong or old addresses that suggest a mix-up.
You have the right to dispute errors. The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau recommends disputing with the credit reporting company first, and with the company that supplied the information, such as your bank or card issuer. Keep copies of everything you send.
Be careful with anyone who promises to clean up your credit for a fee. The FTC says credit repair companies can’t remove accurate negative information from your credit report, and that anything they can legally do for you, you can do yourself. Federal law also bars credit repair organizations from charging before their services are fully performed (15 U.S.C. § 1679b). If someone asks for money upfront or tells you to dispute accurate information, walk away.
Once your business is formed, run business spending through a business bank account and, as you qualify, business credit accounts. Mixing the two makes bookkeeping harder and puts business expenses on your personal file. Keeping them separate also shows you what the business actually earns.
Once your personal file is in order, the next step is building credit in your company’s name. Our business credit page explains how, and the free Business Fundability Quiz shows how your business setup looks to lenders in about two minutes.
Buttered Business is not a credit repair organization, law firm, CPA firm or lender and doesn’t sell credit repair or provide legal, tax or financial advice. This page is general education. Lenders make all credit decisions.

No. Buttered Business doesn’t sell credit repair. This is free education. Federal law bars credit repair organizations from charging before their services are fully performed (15 U.S.C. § 1679b), and the FTC notes that anything a credit repair company can legally do for you, you can do yourself.
No. The FTC says credit repair companies can’t remove accurate negative information from your credit report. Errors are different. You have the right to dispute inaccurate information with the credit bureau and with the company that reported it.
Use AnnualCreditReport.com. The FTC says it’s the only website authorized to fill orders for the free credit reports you’re entitled to by law from Equifax, Experian and TransUnion. Watch out for look-alike sites that misspell the name or pretend to be connected to it.
FICO groups its score factors into five categories: payment history, amounts owed, length of credit history, new credit and credit mix. According to myFICO, payment history is the most important factor in a FICO Score, followed by amounts owed.
On the FICO Score 8 scale, which runs from 300 to 850, Experian labels 670 to 739 as good, 740 to 799 as very good and 800 to 850 as exceptional. Lenders set their own standards, so a “good” score for one lender may not be enough for another.
No. Checking your own credit reports or scores doesn’t lower your score. What can affect it is applying for new credit, because lenders check your credit when you apply. That’s why it’s smart to space out applications before seeking business funding.
Many lenders review the owner’s personal credit, especially for newer businesses without much history, and some ask for a personal guarantee. Strong personal credit habits make you a stronger applicant while your business credit is still being built. Lenders make every approval decision.
