Be honest: how many of these are happening in your business right now?

  • Dry spot #1

    Happy customers stay quiet

Most satisfied customers never think to leave a review unless someone asks at the right moment.

  • Dry spot #2

One bad review sets the tone

A single unanswered complaint sits near the top of your profile and scares off buyers.

  • Dry spot #3

    Stale reviews

Your newest review is a year old, so buyers wonder whether you're still the business those reviews describe.

  • Dry spot #4

    Falling behind competitors

A competitor with more recent reviews and a higher rating gets the call, even when your work is better.

Every one of these has a fix, and it starts with seeing your own numbers.

What Is Reputation Management?

Reputation management is earning, monitoring and responding to what customers say about your business online. For most local businesses, that means reviews, especially on Google. Your rating, your number of reviews, how recent they are and how you respond all shape whether a buyer calls you or the next name on the list.

Golden Reviews is how Buttered Business manages your reputation. We automate honest review requests to every customer, help you respond to every review and keep your Google Business Profile active. No fake reviews. No paid reviews. No gating.

Why Golden Reviews Decide Who Gets the Call

Buyers check. BrightLocal's 2026 survey found that 97% of consumers read reviews for local businesses, and 89% expect business owners to respond to them. It also found that 47% won't use a business with fewer than 20 reviews, and 74% care about reviews from the last three months.

So a handful of old reviews isn't enough, even if they're all five stars. Buyers want recent proof that you still do great work, and they want to see how you handle the occasional problem.

Reviews also help you get found. Google says more reviews and positive ratings can help a business's local ranking, and AI assistants may draw on what customers say when they describe and recommend businesses.

How We Do It

Ask every customer at the right moment

We connect your CRM, booking or job software so each customer gets a short, friendly review request after a completed job, visit or purchase. Texts go only to customers who've agreed to receive them, and email covers the rest. Reminders are limited to a polite number, and requests stop when someone opts out.

Make it easy

One tap takes customers straight to your review page. No hunting for the right listing, no confusing steps. The easier it is, the more likely busy customers follow through.

Respond to every review

You'll get alerts for new reviews and response guidelines for each situation. Thank happy customers by name. Answer complaints calmly, acknowledge the issue and take the details offline. We can draft responses for your approval.

Keep your profile fresh

We add photos, posts and service updates to your Google Business Profile so it looks active and complete. Great reviews can also appear on your website and social media, with the reviewer's words unchanged.

Catch problems early

Monitoring flags unhappy feedback quickly, so you can reach out and make it right. A fast, sincere fix can turn a frustrated customer back into a loyal one.

How to Respond to Reviews: A Simple Framework

For positive reviews: thank the reviewer by name, mention the specific job or service so the reply sounds human, and invite them back. Keep it to two or three sentences.

For negative reviews:

  1. Reply within a day or two, while the issue is fresh.
  2. Acknowledge their experience without arguing or making excuses.
  3. Apologize for how it felt, even if you see the facts differently.
  4. Offer a direct way to resolve it offline, with a name and a phone number or email.
  5. Never share private details about the customer or the job.

Your reply is written for the next hundred readers as much as for the reviewer. Calm and helpful always wins.

When to Ask, by Industry

  • Home services: shortly after the job is marked complete, while the fix is fresh.
  • Home builders: after move-in and again after warranty check-ins, once homeowners have lived in the home.
  • Private schools: at natural milestones for every family, like the end of the first semester.
  • Law firms: after a matter concludes, and only in ways your state bar's rules allow.

Playing by the Rules

Review rules are strict, and they're enforced. The FTC's rule on consumer reviews and testimonials, effective October 21, 2024, bans fake reviews, including AI-generated ones, and lets the FTC seek civil penalties. Google's review policies prohibit offering incentives for reviews and selectively soliciting positive ones.

That's why we ask every customer the same way, never pay for reviews and never write them. Your reputation should hold up to scrutiny, because buyers and regulators both look.

Who It's For

  • Home service companies, where buyers compare star ratings in the map results before they call.
  • Home builders, whose homeowners' experiences shape the next buyer's trust.
  • Law firms, where state bar rules can limit how reviews and testimonials are used in advertising, so we plan around them.
  • Private schools, where families trust other families' experiences.

It's probably not for you if you want fake reviews, bought reviews or a way to bury honest criticism. We won't do any of those.

What We Won't Promise

We won't promise a specific rating, or that negative reviews will disappear. Customers decide what they write, and platforms decide what stays up. We will promise that every customer gets asked, every review gets a response plan and you can see your progress each month.

Where Reputation Management Fits

Reviews power Stay Golden, the retention step of The Buttered System, and they feed The Sizzle by helping you get found. Reputation work pairs naturally with SEO, email and SMS marketing and process automation that sends a request when a job is marked complete. Your reviews and your website get judged together, so run a free website audit to see the other half.

Questions, answered

Straight Answers About Reputation Management

No jargon, no runaround. If your question isnโ€™t here, ask a real human.

Still chewing on something?

Ask a real human. We answer in plain English and never send you down a jargon rabbit hole.

Can you remove negative reviews?

Not just because they're negative. Platforms like Google remove reviews that break their policies, such as spam or conflicts of interest, and we can help you flag those. For honest negative reviews, the best answer is a calm, helpful public reply and a steady flow of recent reviews from happy customers.

Is it legal to ask customers for reviews?

Yes. Asking real customers for honest reviews is allowed. What's not allowed is fake reviews, buying reviews or rewarding only positive ones. Google's policies also prohibit offering incentives for reviews and selectively asking only happy customers. We ask everyone, the same way.

What is review gating?

Review gating means screening customers first and sending only the happy ones to public review sites. Google's review policies prohibit selectively soliciting positive reviews, and the practice misleads buyers. We don't do it. Every customer gets the same honest request.

How should I respond to a negative review?

Quickly, calmly and briefly. Thank them, acknowledge the issue without arguing, and offer to make it right offline with a direct contact. Never share private details. Future customers read your reply as closely as the review, so stay professional.

How many reviews does my business need?

More recent reviews generally help. In BrightLocal's 2026 survey, 47% of consumers said they won't use a business with fewer than 20 reviews, and 74% care about reviews from the last three months. A steady flow matters more than a one-time burst.

Can I offer a discount for leaving a review?

No. Google's policies prohibit offering incentives such as discounts or free services in exchange for reviews, and the FTC's rule on consumer reviews bans incentives tied to positive reviews. A simple, well-timed request works without putting your profile at risk.

Which review sites matter most?

For most local businesses, Google matters most because it feeds the map results. Facebook and industry-specific sites can matter too, depending on your field. We focus your effort where your buyers actually look.
